Behind every great leader…

What does it take to be a great second-in-command leader and how can you make the most from this important position?

Nicky Little from Cirrus comments in The Manager magazine

For a COO or deputy director, being second-in-command presents as many opportunities as it does challenges. How can you make sure the position works well for the organisation and for you?

According to Nicky Little, head of leadership at Cirrus, helping to implement strategy is an important element of the role. “A good second-in-command can help to communicate vision and goals, make them relevant to others in the organisation, and ensure successful delivery.”

For many leaders, the role at the top can be a lonely one.  The second-in-command can be a supportive yet challenging partner. “He or she can be a sounding board, but also be unafraid to pose the difficult questions that others in the organisation might shy away from,” says Little.

Getting the basic parameters right from day one is also key to how well everyone else around you works and gets on, adds Little. “The two people at the top of the organisation are the ultimate role models. Colleagues look to them for consistent purpose and direction. Colleagues also look at how they behave. Are they open with each other, supportive, and respectful of each other’s views? Or do they undermine each other and communicate different messages? If so, it’s likely that others in the organisation will too.”
